Anglophone West Africa 1

National initiatives in The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Region 1 of Anglophone West Africa carries one of the continent’s most influential national movements — the Ghana Evangelism Committee — alongside emerging initiatives in Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.

Ghana: a pioneering national initiative

The Ghana Evangelism Committee emerged in the 1970s, mobilising the whole Church for renewal, church planting, church growth and missions. In its first ten years there was a net increase of 8,785 new churches. A national survey in the mid-1980s covered 23,000 towns and found 14,711 with no church presence — a finding that pushed denominations to accelerate church planting among the least-evangelised communities. A later survey, begun in 2007, mobilised dozens more ministries, and there are now thousands of new churches among predominantly least-reached peoples.

Gathering in Ghana

In February 2016, church leaders from across the continent met for the MANI African Heads of Churches Summit at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa-Fetteh, Ghana.
